If you did not create a back up before you tried to upgrade, and an archive and reinstall does not work, try using Target Disk Mode to access the Mac's disk drive and delete unwanted data that way. After you upgrade to Mac OS Sierra, you can then manually restore your data from the backup to your Mac. If you made a back up with Time Machine, you can restore the Mac from that backup or you may use recovery to erase the drive completely then reinstall OS X. Since this has not worked, I would boot your Mac up into recovery then attempt a reinstall of the previous OS X if possible.
